• Notes

  Bertha Griffis graduated from Hugo High School in 1920 with a 4.0 GPA and was the school's valedictorian. She went on to attend Southeastern State Teachers College (now known as Southeastern Oklahoma State University) in Durant OK. and was the first person to receive a lifetime teaching certificate from the institution. She later earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education degree. Bertha taught school for over thirty years in Choctaw County and at the end of her career she had been principal in three school districts. She was active in 4-H, taught piano and coached softball. After retirement she worked as a substitute teacher for several years.
